About music in Eindhoven
Eindhoven is a music city in a way that surprises many newcomers. In one week you can hear a world-famous pianist in a hall built for acoustics, a British indie band in a former linen factory and a dance event for thousands of people in an old Philips factory hall. On this page you will find all concerts and music events coming up in Eindhoven.
The main concert venues
The Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on the Heuvel, right in the city centre, was opened by Queen Beatrix in 1992. It is the place for classical music, jazz, world music and singer-songwriters, and it welcomes roughly a quarter of a million visitors a year. International orchestras and soloists perform in the main hall, the Hertog Jan Zaal, and the venue has its own series, such as the Great Pianists series.
The Effenaar on the Dommelstraat is the city's pop venue. It started in the early 1970s, when young people took over an old linen factory, and grew into one of the best-known pop venues in the country. The current building by MVRDV opened in 2005, with a large hall for about 1,300 people and a small hall for about 400. Expect indie, rock, hip-hop, metal, dance and Dutch-language pop.
For big concerts and dance events, the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S can welcome up to about 10,000 visitors in its halls. And in the Parktheater Eindhoven you will regularly find concerts in a seated theatre setting.
What kind of music is on?
- Classical and chamber music: international orchestras, string quartets and solo recitals at the Muziekgebouw.
- Jazz, soul and world music: from big bands to singers from Africa and Latin America.
- Pop, rock and indie: Dutch and international bands at the Effenaar, from up-and-coming acts to big names.
- Dance and electronic music: club nights at the Effenaar and large events at Strijp-S.
- Singer-songwriters and tribute shows: often in the seated halls of the Muziekgebouw and the Parktheater.
Music for internationals
Music is the easiest way to go out in a new country: you don't need to speak Dutch to enjoy a concert. Many artists at the Effenaar and the Muziekgebouw sing in English, and venue staff speak English. One thing to know: in the Netherlands the time on the ticket is often the time the doors open, and the concert starts later. The Effenaar and the Muziekgebouw usually list both.
Tips for concert-goers
- Buy tickets early. Popular concerts sell out, sometimes weeks or months in advance. Check the venue website for resale options.
- Look for the standing and seated options. The Effenaar is mostly standing; the Muziekgebouw and the Parktheater are mostly seated, but some concerts have standing areas.
- Check the price carefully. Venues sometimes add service fees, and some tickets include a drink. We list the price as published by the venue.
- Getting there. The Muziekgebouw and the Effenaar are both within a ten-minute walk of Eindhoven Centraal. For the Klokgebouw, take the train to Eindhoven Strijp-S.
