Mitsuko Uchida: Haydn, Mozart and Schubert

Some musicians you should hear live at least once in your life. Mitsuko Uchida is one of them. On Sunday 29 November 2026 the pianist plays a solo recital in the Hertog Jan Zaal of the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, as part of the venue's series of great pianists.

Who is Mitsuko Uchida?

Mitsuko Uchida is one of the most admired pianists of our time. Born in Japan and based in London for many years, she is especially known for her interpretations of Mozart and Schubert, composers she has performed and recorded throughout her long career. Her playing is famous for its clarity, its warmth and its attention to the smallest details, and her recitals are known for carefully built programmes that connect composers from different centuries.

The programme

For this recital, Uchida combines the Viennese classics with music from the twentieth century:

  • Joseph Haydn: Variations in F minor.
  • Arnold Schönberg: Sechs kleine Klavierstücke (Six Little Piano Pieces).
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Rondo in A minor, K. 511.
  • György Kurtág: Márta ligaturája.
  • Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959.

It is a programme with a clear arc. Haydn's Variations in F minor are among his most personal piano works. Schönberg's six short pieces, each lasting barely a minute, are miniatures that changed the history of piano music. Mozart's Rondo in A minor is one of his most melancholic piano works, and the short piece by the Hungarian composer György Kurtág, a dedication to his wife Márta, is an intimate moment of reflection. The evening ends with one of Schubert's last and greatest piano sonatas, written in the final months of his life: a large, songful work full of contrasts.

You don't need to know these pieces to enjoy the concert. If you are new to classical music, a solo recital by a pianist of this level is one of the best possible introductions.

Good to know

Classical concerts in the Netherlands have few rules. There is no dress code: most people wear smart-casual clothes. Arrive on time, because latecomers may have to wait until a suitable moment to enter. Applause usually comes at the end of a complete piece, not between the movements of a sonata; if in doubt, wait until the rest of the hall starts clapping.

The interval drink is included in your ticket. Many people order it at the bar before the concert starts, so it is ready at the interval.

For internationals

Music needs no translation. The Muziekgebouw's website and ticket shop are available in English, and staff speak English. A Sunday evening recital is a calm, beautiful way to end the weekend, and the concert ends early enough to get home at a reasonable hour.
