About markets in Eindhoven
Markets are part of everyday life in Eindhoven. Every day of the week there is a market somewhere in the city, from neighbourhood markets with fruit, vegetables and cheese to a sustainable market in the city centre and special markets around Christmas. On this page you will find all markets coming up in Eindhoven.
Weekly markets
Eindhoven has weekly markets in many neighbourhoods. According to the city's own events platform, these include:
- Monday: market on the Tarwelaan (12:00 to 16:30).
- Wednesday: markets at Winkelcentrum Woensel (09:00 to 12:00) and on the Kastelenplein (13:00 to 16:30).
- Thursday: markets at Winkelcentrum Haagdijk on the Tongelresestraat (09:00 to 12:00) and on the Sint Trudoplein (13:00 to 16:30).
- Friday: market on the Sint Gerardusplein (12:00 to 16:30).
- Saturday: the Woenselse Markt (10:00 to 17:00) and the sustainable weekly market on the Wilhelminaplein (10:00 to 16:00).
Opening times can change with the seasons and on public holidays, so check before you go. Market traders often prefer to be paid by card these days, but a little cash never hurts.
What you will find
At a Dutch market you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, fish, bread, flowers and plants, and often stalls with clothes, textiles and household goods. Many internationals discover their favourite Dutch foods at the market: a freshly baked stroopwafel, raw herring or a slice of aged Gouda. Ask for a taste of the cheese; it is completely normal.
Special markets
Besides the weekly markets, Eindhoven has markets with a theme. Around Christmas, for example, the Winter Market at the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven brings together more than 80 stalls with handmade gifts, local products and seasonal treats, organised by the Holland Expat Center South and TIEC. On King's Day (27 April) the whole country turns into a giant flea market, where everyone can sell their old things on the street without a permit.
Tips for market visitors
- Go early. The best fruit and vegetables go first, and markets get busy around midday on Saturdays.
- Bring a bag. Plastic bags are not free in the Netherlands, so bring your own shopping bag.
- Speak English. Most traders speak some English, and pointing always works. A few words of Dutch ("een kilo", "dank je wel") are always appreciated.
- Mind your bike. Park your bike in the bike racks, not against the stalls.
Markets for internationals
For newcomers, the weekly market is one of the easiest places to feel at home in a Dutch neighbourhood. Traders soon recognise regular customers, and many are happy to explain what a product is or how to prepare it. It's also the cheapest place to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, and a good place to discover seasonal Dutch produce, from asparagus in spring to kale (boerenkool) in winter.
