About Wilhelminaplein
The Wilhelminaplein is a square on the western edge of the city centre of Eindhoven, at the end of the Kleine Berg and the start of the Bergen quarter. It is a pleasant square with cafés and restaurants around it, and every Saturday it hosts one of the most popular markets in the city: the sustainable weekly market (Duurzame Weekmarkt).
The sustainable weekly market
Every Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, the Duurzame Weekmarkt fills the Wilhelminaplein with stalls. As the name says, the focus is on sustainable products: think fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese and other food, often from local and organic producers. It is a market where people come not just to shop, but also to have a chat, a coffee and a bite to eat on one of the terraces around the square.
For newcomers, the market is a great way to discover local products and to practise a few words of Dutch. Most traders speak English as well.
Carnival on the Wilhelminaplein
During carnival, the Wilhelminaplein is one of the places where the party happens. In 2026, the carnival prince made his long-awaited appearance on the square on carnival Monday. Check the carnival event for the programme of the next edition.
The neighbourhood
The Wilhelminaplein is a good starting point for discovering the Bergen quarter (De Bergen), one of the oldest parts of the city centre, with narrow streets, independent shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés. The Kleine Berg, a street full of restaurants from around the world, starts right here. The Markt and the Catharinakerk are within walking distance, and the Van Abbemuseum is about ten minutes on foot.
Good to know
- Market times: Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00. Times may differ on public holidays.
- Bring a bag: plastic bags are not free in the Netherlands.
- Paying: most stalls accept card payments, but a little cash can be handy.
- Terraces: the cafés around the square have terraces that are popular on sunny days.
A Saturday on the Wilhelminaplein
A perfect Saturday morning in Eindhoven might look like this: cycle to the Wilhelminaplein, do your weekly shopping at the market, have a coffee on one of the terraces, and then wander through the Bergen quarter, with its small shops, galleries and cafés. In the afternoon, the city centre and its shopping streets are just around the corner.
The square is also a good place to meet people. Many regular visitors come every week, and market traders soon recognise their regular customers. For newcomers, it is a small but real way to feel part of the city.
Events on the square
Besides the weekly market, the Wilhelminaplein is used for city events from time to time, from carnival to smaller festivals. You will find them in the calendar above as soon as they are announced.
Getting there
The Wilhelminaplein is about a fifteen-minute walk from Eindhoven Centraal, through the city centre. There are bike racks around the square. Several buses stop nearby; check 9292.nl for the best connection. Car parks are available in the city centre.
