Sustainable Weekly Market on the Wilhelminaplein
Every Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, the Wilhelminaplein on the western edge of the city centre fills with stalls for the Duurzame Weekmarkt, the sustainable weekly market of Eindhoven. Entry is free, and it is one of the nicest ways to start a Saturday in the city.
What is the Duurzame Weekmarkt?
"Duurzaam" is Dutch for sustainable, and that is what this market is about. Instead of the usual mix of cheap clothes and phone cases you find at some markets, the focus here is on food and products that are made with care: think fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese and other food, often from local and organic producers. It is a market for people who like to know where their food comes from, and who like to chat with the people who make it.
The Wilhelminaplein is a pleasant square with cafés and terraces around it, so many visitors combine their shopping with a coffee or lunch. On sunny Saturdays the square is one of the liveliest places in the city.

Tips for your visit
- Come early for the best choice of fresh products; popular items can be sold out by the afternoon.
- Bring your own bag. In the Netherlands plastic bags are not free, and at a sustainable market a reusable bag is part of the spirit.
- Paying: most stalls accept cards, but a little cash is always handy at a market.
- Ask for a taste. At many cheese and food stalls you can try before you buy. Just ask.
- Practise your Dutch. Market traders are patient with learners. "Mag ik een stukje proeven?" (may I have a taste?) is a good start, but English works fine too.
For internationals
For newcomers, the market is a great introduction to Dutch food: try different kinds of cheese, seasonal vegetables you may not know, and freshly baked bread. It is also a good place to feel at home in the neighbourhood, since many regular visitors come every week.
Around the Wilhelminaplein
The square is at the end of the Kleine Berg, a street full of restaurants from around the world, and at the start of the Bergen quarter, one of the oldest parts of the city centre, with small shops, galleries and cafés. The Markt and the Catharinakerk are within walking distance, and the Van Abbemuseum is about ten minutes' walk away, so a market visit easily turns into a day in the city.
Other markets in Eindhoven
Eindhoven has weekly markets in many neighbourhoods, from the Woenselse Markt on Saturdays to markets on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You will find an overview in the markets category.
