About other in Eindhoven

Not every event fits neatly into a box. In this category you will find everything that is not music, theatre, a market or one of the other categories: talks, commemorations, fairs, open days, information evenings for internationals, neighbourhood initiatives and other activities in Eindhoven.

Events for internationals

Eindhoven has one of the largest international communities in the Netherlands, thanks to the Eindhoven University of Technology, the High Tech Campus and companies such as ASML and Philips. Many organisations run events specifically for newcomers: welcome days, information evenings about living and working in the Netherlands, networking drinks and social meetups. The Holland Expat Center South, based in Eindhoven, is a good starting point for practical questions and organises events throughout the year.

Commemorations

Some dates matter a lot in Eindhoven. On 18 September the city commemorates its liberation in 1944, and the Lichtjesroute, a route of light decorations through the neighbourhoods, is lit from that date. On 4 May the whole country remembers the victims of war with two minutes of silence at 20:00. It is respectful to stop what you are doing for those two minutes, even in a shop or on the street.

Open days and fairs

Throughout the year, schools, universities, companies and organisations open their doors. The TU/e, the Design Academy Eindhoven and Fontys hold open days for future students, and fairs about housing, careers and education regularly take place in the city.

Talks and lectures

Eindhoven is a city of knowledge. Universities, museums and cultural organisations organise talks and debates about technology, design, art and society. The Van Abbemuseum, for example, hosts talks and conferences, and during Dutch Design Week there are dozens of talks and debates.

Libraries and community centres

The city library in the Witte Dame, a former Philips lamp factory in the city centre, is more than a place to borrow books. Libraries in the Netherlands organise language cafés, digital help, talks and activities for children, and many of them are open to everyone. Community centres in the neighbourhoods do the same on a smaller scale.

Tips

  • Check the language. Not every talk or information evening is in English. We mention the language when we know it.
  • Register. Many talks and information evenings are free but require registration.
  • Ask questions. Organisers of events for internationals are used to questions about the Dutch way of doing things.

Volunteering and community

Eindhoven has many volunteer organisations, from food banks to festivals that rely on volunteers. GLOW, for example, works with a crew of volunteers every year. Volunteering is a good way to meet people, practise your Dutch and get to know the city from the inside. Look out for calls for volunteers in the calendar and on the websites of the big festivals.
