About Muziekgebouw Eindhoven

The Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is the city's concert hall, right in the heart of the centre on the Heuvel. If you want to hear a world-famous pianist, a symphony orchestra from Germany, a jazz big band or a singer-songwriter in a seated hall with excellent acoustics, this is where you go. The venue now presents itself as MgE, and locals simply call it "the Muziekgebouw".

A short history

Concerts in Eindhoven have a long history. Before the Muziekgebouw existed, performances took place in halls such as the Philips Recreation Centre, opened in 1929 by Anton Philips. In the late 1980s the city decided to build a real concert hall as part of the new Heuvel Galerie shopping centre, on the grounds of a former city hospital. Construction started in 1990, and on 2 September 1992 Queen Beatrix officially opened the building, then called the Muziekcentrum Frits Philips, after the former Philips president who was a great supporter of music in the city.

After a major renovation some eighteen years later, the building was renamed the Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven. Today it is one of the busiest concert venues in the south of the Netherlands: in 2025 it welcomed a record 246,416 visitors to 530 events, 112 of which were sold out.

What's on

The programme is broad and international. You will find:

  • Classical music: visiting orchestras from across Europe, chamber music and the series of great pianists, with names such as Mitsuko Uchida.
  • Jazz, soul and world music: from big bands to artists from Africa, Latin America and beyond.
  • Singer-songwriters and pop: Dutch and international artists in a seated setting.
  • Free events and exhibitions: in the foyers, for example during Dutch Design Week and GLOW.

The main hall is the Hertog Jan Zaal, where a distinctive yellow chair pays tribute to Frits Philips. The building also has several smaller halls and foyers that are used for concerts, talks and exhibitions.

Good to know for internationals

Music needs no translation, which makes the Muziekgebouw one of the easiest places to go out if you don't speak Dutch yet. The website and ticket shop work in English, and staff speak English. Concert pages list both the time the doors open ("deuren open") and the start time. For many classical concerts an interval drink is included in the ticket price.

Many concerts are seated, with several price categories ("rang"). Some pop and jazz concerts have free seating or a mix of standing and seated places, which is mentioned on the concert page.

The building and the mural

From the outside, look up: one of the facades of the Muziekgebouw carries Echoes of Harmony, a large mural by the Eindhoven street-art duo Studio Giftig, which was named best mural in the world by Street Art Cities. During GLOW the mural gets an extra dimension in light and sound.

Getting there

The Muziekgebouw is on the Heuvel, a short walk from Eindhoven Centraal through the city centre. The public entrance is at Heuvel 140. Car parks are available nearby, including under the Heuvel shopping centre. By bike, there is guarded bike parking at the Heuvel.

Combine your concert with dinner in the city centre: the Markt, the Kleine Berg and the 18 Septemberplein are all within a few minutes' walk. Check the calendar above for upcoming concerts, or see all music in Eindhoven.
